Are forestry trailers the same as forwarding trailers?

Pfanzelt says yes. In the professional sector, a forwarding trailer means a trailer with crane that can be used both in the forest and on the road for transporting logs as well as firewood and cuttings. The term forestry trailer is also widely used, but in principle means the same thing. The use of the terms forestry trailers, forwarding trailers, crane trailers, mobile cranes, timber trailers, timber forestry trailers, timber forwarding vehicles, stanchion trailers, lumber trailers is regional.

Why Pfanzelt forestry trailers?

Pfanzelt Maschinenbau has been on the market with professional forestry technology since 1991 and is fully aware of the needs in forestry and landscape maintenance. Which model series is the right one for me?

Only you can decide which product line is right for you. We will be happy to help you and support you in choosing a product. We have compiled a checklist for you:

Wood checklist

What type of wood is to be transported?

  • Firewood, one-metre logs, or bundles?
  • Short timber and/or long timber?
  • Chopping wood or bulk materials?
  • Tipper platform, interchangeable bodies implemented?

Tractor checklist

This Pfanzelt checklist is based on the assumption that agricultural tractors for use on fields, dirt tracks and public roads will be used. The following must be taken into account here:

  • Engine power: does it match the trailer size?
  • Performance of the working hydraulics: is the supply sufficient for the trailer crane, or is a separate hydraulic system required?
  • Brake system Does the tractor have a pneumatic brake system or is an overrun brake required?
  • Must the new forestry trailer be capable of being towed by several tractors with different equipment?

The routing checklist

In the case of lumber trailers for use in forests, users often expect them to be suitable for being driven both in the forest and on public roads.

Nevertheless, one should be aware of the following:

  • Should the trailer also be suitable for being driven on forwarding trails?
  • Should the trailer be suitable for being driven on public roads and, if so, with a load and at what speed?

Equipment checklist

You should only start on this checklist once you have completed and resolved the preceding checklists!

  • Crane reach
  • Off-road capability, appropriate bogie clearance
  • Crane operation from an operator’s station, via remote control or from the tractor cab?
  • All-wheel drive of trailer:
    • Not required,
    • auxiliary drive for difficult passages, or
    • fully-fledged permanent drive?

Pfanzelt forestry trailer FAQs

For which areas of application is the forestry trailer suitable?

Pfanzelt forestry trailers impress with their forwarding in standing timber. The forestry trailer is easy to move around on the ground. When driving uphill, the tractor must provide sufficient traction for pulling up to ten solid cubic meters of wood. Otherwise, an optional travel drive of the trailer is indispensable. The folding drawbar makes manoeuvring in tight spaces easier. Thanks to the high ground clearance and the above-average pendulum travel of the bogie axle, the Pfanzelt forestry trailer is able to easily navigate across even quite elevated, hilly terrain.

On-road transport with a load

When driving on public roads, the timber is secured to the trailer with three lashing points so that it is non-slip. A mechanical locking mechanism on the folding drawbar prevents the trailer from accidentally shearing out. For practical convenience, the crane can be supported on the frame with a support claw when the trolley is empty. In addition, the gripper can be set down safely at the front of the front wall. This means that the crane unit will not slip, even during fast driving manoeuvres, and is also not exposed to unnecessary loads.

What is the difference between timber forestry trailers with cranes and forestry trailers with cranes?

There is no difference here. These are only regional terms for a forwarding trailer for forestry. However, forwarding trailers are not only used for forwarding in the forest, but also tend to be used more and more frequently for road transport of logs, branches and shrubs. This makes road approval for a forwarding trailer mandatory. The easiest way to do this is with a manufacturer’s COC document. Forwarding trailers can be approved for road-use at 25 or 40 km/h.

A distinction must also be made with regard to forwarding in the forest as to whether the forwarding trailer is used directly in standing timber, on forwarding trails or only on forest roads.

Which brake system is suitable for my forestry trailer?

Hydraulic, pneumatic, or overrun brake? The type of brake depends on the tractor. If you want to be independent of the tractor’s brake system, a trailer overrun brake should be fitted. This brake system can be approved for road use up to a speed of 40 km/h. In the case of an overrun brake, it is also important to ensure that it can also be used for reversing. For this purpose, an appropriate design of the overrun brake is required, as manual locking is not permissible according to the German Road Traffic Licencing Regulations. If, for safety reasons, you also want to be able to brake when reversing in the forest, a special reverse brake control of the overrun brake from the tractor is also required.

Please note: For on-road transports, an overrun or compressed-air brake system is required by law.
